Title: Ambitious, comprehensive transformation agenda: The Malaysian Public Sector OSS Initiative
Abstract: This presentation will share the journey of transforming the Malaysian Public Sector from proprietary dependency to OSS adoptions. The Malaysian Public Sector OSS initiatives started in 2004 when the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (or MAMPU), under the Prime Minister’s Department is entrusted to lead this initiative and in support of the Electronic Government Flagship development. A Comprehensive OSS Masterplan was developed in collaboration with all stakeholders from the business community, OSS community and also the Public Sector. MAMPU started the OSS initiatives as a pioneering project and then sustain it through 3 phases of implementation. Now OSS is a contributor to the national ICT Agenda supporting our nation building program. The OSS Master-plan is a long-term plan that moves the Public Sector from OSS shy to OSS competency and self reliance. It also harness collaboration with the industry encouraging and creating economic values and new businesses. Title: The Success Factors for a National Open Source Initiative
Abstract: There are numerous national and local Open Source development, deployment and use projects carried out by government agencies, around the world. One of them was Pardus, the Linux distribution developed in Turkey. Pardus project has been active from 2003 to 2012, released from 2005 to 2011, and has been phased out (except the brand name) since 2012. Building on top of the Pardus experience, success factors for such national and local government initiatives will be discussed.

Abstract: The Xen Hypervisor was built for the Cloud from the outset: when Xen was designed, we anticipated a world, which today is known as cloud computing. Today, Xen powers the largest clouds in production. This talk explores success criteria, architecture, trade-offs and challenges for cloudy hypervisors. It is intended for users and developers and starts with a brief introduction to Xen and its architecture, introduces the concept of domain disaggregation as an approach to increase security, robustness and scalability: all important factors for building clouds at scale. The talk will conclude with an update on Xen support in Linux, Xen for ARM servers and other exciting developments in the Xen community and their implications for building open source clouds!

Abstract: We will present Apache CloudStack and project currently in incubation at the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). CloudStack is an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) solution to build public and/or private clouds. It is hypervisor agnostic, highly scalable and support advanced networking such as site to site VPN, VLAN isolation and Software Defined Networking. The presentation will highlight the growing CloudStack community, explain how to participate in the development of CloudStack and will also demonstrate the unique features that makes it a powerful system to deploy clouds.

Abstract: The “Sankoré program”  has three main gaols: equip classrooms, train teachers, and produce local free educational resource for all using thé Open Sankore software avalisa le to day in 26 international languages including the arabic one . The team deploys Sankoré digital interactive classes which consist of a computer, an interactive video projector and innovative open source software. The software “Open Sankoré”, available in 26 languages, is open source, free, and it allows teachers to create and edit their own digital resources. To do this, the user receives assistance through permanent support with guidelines or educational tutorials that help them to improve their teaching practice. Educational resources produced by teachers with the “Open Sankoré” ecosystem are also open source and free. Then the teacher can use the software to perform interactive activities with students in classroom.

Abstract: The Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) model provides interesting tools and processes with which women and men can create, exchange, share and exploit software and knowledge efficiently and effectively. FOSS can play an important role as a practical instrument for development as its free and open aspirations make it a natural component of development. In contributing to the development of the education sector, FOSS can play an empowering role to expand quality education for all, increase community access to ICTs and broaden cultural and linguistic diversity.  Examples can be provided where FOSS contributes towards understanding ICT in Education, curriculum development and assessment of students, enhanced pedagogy, organization and administration of learning institutions and the providing teachers with professional learning opportunities.  These applications reiterate the role of FOSS in learning to know, learning to do, earning to live together and learning to be.

Title: Use of Free/Open Source Software in Education – An Introduction
Abstract: Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) can be used as part of the effort to set up Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructures to support learning activities in educational institutions. In short, such infrastructures can hosting e-learning services, repositories and communities. Resorting to a FOSS basis may, not only provide several advantages to students and lecturers, but also lead to effective cost reductions in Education. In this talk, we present a brief overview of the FOSS concept and quality-related issues, followed by an analysis of  the mostly used FOSS Learning Management Systems. In addition, we introduce the plan for a case study developed at the University of Minho, Portugal, where FOSS projects are used to support teaching and learning activities within an Informatics degree.
